About Blue Clay......
This folk pottery comes from a small village in the Mexican State of Guerrero. The artisans who make and paint this pottery are descendants of the Aztecs called Nahua, and are believed to have existed since 700 AD. They learn to paint this type of pottery at a very early age, mixing their own paints and finding their own form of expression. Each piece is done entirely by hand and some of this work is displayed and has been sold by National Geographic and the Smithsonian. The Blue Clay technique is different in that each piece is first primed with cobalt blue. The design painting is then done with light colors which are finally filled out with bright acrylic colors. Each piece is signed by the artist and each is truly an original. |
